Moving from Gmail to Saleto Mail
Switching from Gmail to a saleto.com mailbox does not have to mean telling everyone your address changed overnight. You can keep receiving mail sent to your old Gmail address while you move day-to-day work into Saleto. This guide covers what you can do today with standard Gmail settings—no special Saleto migration tool required.
Before you start
- Create your Saleto mailbox at saleto.com/signup.
- Complete verification (SMS or alternate email—one method is enough).
- Sign in at saleto.com/login and note your mailbox address (for example
you@saleto.com). - Find your invite code under Settings & Contacts → Invite Code in the mailbox.
1. Forward Gmail into Saleto (~3 minutes)
Gmail can automatically forward new mail to another address. When someone emails
you@gmail.com, a copy can arrive at you@saleto.com so you do not
miss messages during the switch.
- In Gmail, open Settings → See all settings → Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
-
Click Add a forwarding address and enter your full Saleto address (for example
you@saleto.com). - Gmail sends a verification message to Saleto. Open it in your Saleto inbox and click the confirmation link (check Spam if needed).
- Return to Gmail forwarding settings, choose Forward a copy of incoming mail to, select your Saleto address, and click Save Changes.
Gmail keeps a copy in your Gmail inbox unless you choose “delete Gmail’s copy.” Replies you send from Saleto are stored in Saleto, not automatically mirrored back into Gmail.
2. Bring your contacts (~5–10 minutes)
Saleto does not yet offer a one-click Google Contacts import. You can still rebuild your list quickly:
- Collected addresses: As forwarded Gmail mail arrives, reply to people you trust or mark them safe—they are added to your address collection automatically.
- Manual add: In the mailbox go to Settings & Contacts → Address Collection and add important addresses one at a time.
- Export from Google (optional): In Google Contacts, select contacts → Export → vCard or CSV. Keep the file for reference and add key people into Saleto as you go. Full vCard upload into Saleto may be added in a future release.
- Share your invite code with people you want in your Inbox on first contact—see Invite-only email explained.
3. Keep an archive of old Gmail mail (~2 minutes to start)
Saleto does not import your entire Gmail history. If you need years of old mail for reference, export it from Google and keep the archive on your computer (same approach many services use).
- Visit Google Takeout and click Deselect all.
- Scroll to Mail, check it, and optionally limit labels or date ranges.
- Click Next step, choose export format (defaults are fine for most people), then Create export.
- Google emails you when the download is ready—large mailboxes can take hours or days.
The export is typically an MBOX file you can search with desktop mail tools or keep Gmail open read-only for occasional lookups. You do not need to upload MBOX into Saleto for day-to-day mail.
4. Send mail from Saleto (not from Gmail)
New mail you compose in Saleto is sent from your @saleto.com address. Saleto does
not currently offer “send as Gmail” through Google sign-in. Over time, tell important contacts
your Saleto address; forwarded Gmail mail lets you transition without missing anything sent to the
old address.
5. After forwarding: tidy the transition
- Review Spam for legitimate forwarded senders and mark them Safe.
- Use custom folders and rules under Settings → Folders as volume grows.
- When most people use your Saleto address, you can turn off Gmail forwarding in Google settings.
- Update recovery email and phone in Saleto profile if they still point only at Gmail.
Frequently asked questions
Will everyone need my new address immediately?
No. With Gmail forwarding on, mail to your old Gmail address still reaches you in Saleto. Share
you@saleto.com when convenient.
Why did a forwarded message go to Spam?
Saleto applies invite-only rules to the original sender. Mark trusted senders safe or share your invite code so their next message lands in Inbox.
Can I import all my old Gmail into Saleto?
Not today. Use Google Takeout for a personal archive, or keep Gmail read-only for historical search.
Does Saleto forward my mail to Gmail?
Only if you add addresses under Settings → Forwarding in Saleto—that is separate from Gmail forwarding into Saleto.
